Fluoride's importance to dental enamel has been proved by the ADA (American Dental Association), the WHO (World Health Organization), the American Medical Association (AMA), and other professional organizations. Cities that put fluoride in their water supply have fewer problems with tooth decay and cavities. A natural mineral found in some food and the earth's crust, fluoride strengthens teeth and bones. Fluoride treatments at King House Dental Group in Redlands, CA may help children who have developing teeth and older patients with weakened enamels to improve their dental health. Fluoride treatments may be given to all patients, although it is typically given to younger patients who still have growing teeth or who have not developed a good oral care routine at home. Dr. Tatevossian also recommends fluoride treatments for older patients who don't have fluoride in their drinking water or if they are susceptible to cavities. King House Dental Group uses different formulas of fluoride if you have specific concerns, like neutral sodium fluoride for those with a dry mouth and acidulated phosphate fluoride for those with restorations (bridges, crowns, and dentures). We also offer a choice of flavors to make these treatments easier for both younger and older patients.
What to Expect
Professional fluoride treatments are usually done every six months after your cleaning. When you select your flavor, the dental hygienist will prepare the fluoride treatment as a foam, gel, or paint-on varnish. The treatment will be kept on your teeth for 1 – 4 minutes so the fluoride can sink into your enamel, then it can be spit out. The hygienist will use suction to help remove any excess fluoride after the procedure since you will not be able to rinse out your mouth, drink, or eat for at least half an hour after.
Nausea and vomiting can occur if you accidentally swallow any fluoride; however, this should subside within 24 hours following your treatment. In certain patients, Dr. Tatevossian may give you fluoride supplements to use at home. Since fluoride is toxic in high doses, you need to be careful and prevent children from getting supplements. Although these professional treatments help to strengthen the teeth, you need to continue or establish a regular oral care routine at home by using a fluoridated toothpaste and flossing. You should also schedule exams and cleanings at King House Dental Group so Dr. Tatevossian can continue to assess your need for fluoride treatments.
Most dental insurance companies pay for professional fluoride treatments for younger patients while adults may not be covered. We work to get the most coverage through your dental insurance before determining your out-of-pocket costs. If you do not have insurance, King House Dental Group offers different payment methods and can help you find medical financing.
