A dental bridge is a porcelain tooth that replaces a natural one that has been lost. This porcelain tooth bridge can be removable or fixed.
Redlands, CA dentist, Dr. Steve Tatevossian, offers fixed bridges for patients needing to close the gap where teeth are missing, or to serve as anchor teeth. Missing teeth are not only a cosmetic concern for our patients, but can also lead to oral health issues, such as decay, TMJ, teeth movement, and other issues concerning the mouth and jaw.
While a dental bridge, which is a prosthetic device, fills the gap between teeth, dental crowns are often used on either side to serve as anchors. Dental bridges are highly durable and the end result is a natural-looking, flawless, restored smile.
Dental bridges are usually done in two visits. In the first visit, the dentist will prepare the two adjacent teeth that will become the anchors to the porcelain bridge. 3D impressions are taken and sent to the dental lab to make the bridge.
Then the dentist will place a temporary bridge while the final one is sent from the lab. In the second visit, the dentist disposes of the temporary bridge and installs and adjusts the permanent one for functionality, aesthetics, and comfort.
Patients who are good candidates for dental bridges will have one or more missing teeth that have either fallen out or been extracted. They must also have two strong and healthy teeth I the mouth on each side of the area where teeth are missing.
A dental bridge can last from five to fifteen years, provided good dental hygiene habits and regular dentist visits are mainteined.
Dental bridges do not need any special care, but a constant oral health regime is recommended. It’s very important to visit the dentist twice a year for checkups and cleanings, along with daily brushing and flossing.
